WHAT IS ZAKAT?
Zakat is an annual financial act of worship. It is the obligation of wealthy Muslims (those possessing the nisab) to give one fortieth (i.e. 2.5%) of their wealth, for the sake of Allah’s pleasure, to one of the categories specified in verse 60 of Surah At-Tawbah in the Holy Qur’an.
Zakat is not merely a material act of sharing; it is also a means for the believer to purify their wealth and cleanse their heart.
The purpose of this act of worship is to help meet the basic needs of those in need, to save the wealthy from stinginess and the poor from despair.
Allah the Almighty has said – in meaning –: “Establish prayer properly and give zakat. Whatever good you send ahead for yourselves, you will find it with Allah (as something even better). There is no doubt that Allah the Almighty sees all that you do.”
(Surah al-Baqarah, verse 110)
